Sealed Low Friction and Extra Long Sealed Low Friction System: Brakes

TOOLS NEEDED

  • repair stand
  • electrician wire cutters
  • metric allen wrenches
  • metric end wrenches
  • torque wrench
  • new razor blade
  • sharp awl or punch
  • bicycle cable and housing cutters

SUPPORT

  1. Note: There are two different lengths of cables in the kit. The longer cable and liner are for the rear brake, the shorter cable and liner are for the front brake. Each cable has two end terminations - a barrel end (mountain bike) and a pear end (road bike). Select the end that corresponds to your type of brake and remove the end termination you will not be using.
  2. Remove old cables and housing; note cable routing and location of ferrules. Using old housing pieces as a pattern, cut new housing lengths to match. Using wire cutters and awl make sure housing ends are free of burrs and wide open. Install new housing into place on bike.
  3. Turn barrel adjusters fully clockwise.
  4. Remove the new cable from liner and carefully feed the liner through the first length of housing — non-flanged end first.
  5. Feed a silver ferrule* followed by the liner (flanged end first) onto the new cable. Note that the flanged end of the liner is locked into place between the end of the housing and the ferrule. *Some brake levers may not require a ferrule.
  6. Carefully feed liner through the new housing and cable stops, adding silver ferrules at the barrel adjusters and black ferrules at the cable housing stops on the frame. For bikes equipped with V-brakes, discard the plastic liner in the metal noodle; it will not be needed. If liner does not fit through barrel adjuster, use a 3/32" OR 2 mm drill to slightly enlarge the opening.
  7. Pull the liner taught in the housing and carefully cut the liner approximately 3/8" (10 mm) from the exit of the last length of cable housing (if liner interferes with brake travel this length may be shortened).
  8. Carefully feed the new cable into the brake lever, then through the new housing and liner assembly. Take care not to damage the coating on any sharp edges.
  9. Insert a Grub™ seal by twisting it as it is pulled over the cable - large opening first, and cover 3/8" (10 mm) of exposed liner. This completely seals the system.
  10. With cable held taught, secure it in pinch bolt and tighten to brake manufacturer's torque requirements. Trim off the excess cable and crimp a cap on cable end. Slide red crimp cap cover over crimp cap.
  11. Adjust brakes as usual. Repeat as necessary for other brake.
  12. NOTES: Some installations may require drilling or filing the housing stop openings slightly to allow free passage of continuous liner.

Do not use grease, oil, or any other lubricant with GORE™ RIDE ON® Cable System.

WARNING: With the exception of the barrel adjuster opening, do not alter or remove any of the original brake components as this could result in a system failure.
